NE Learning Journey (Term 4)

Dear Parents/Guardians,
P2R will be going on a National Education Learning Journey on the 22nd September 2011. Please ensure that your child is aware of the following do's/dont's below:

1. Do not touch works of art.
A slightest contact can damage the surface of a painting, discolor stone, and even rust metal.

2. Keep a safe distance between you and each work of art.
This helps to avoid accidental touching or bumping.

3. Use only pencils.
If an accident should occur, a pencil mark is easier to remove than a pen mark.

4. No leaning on walls or cases (either to write or for physical support).
This helps keep works of art hung on the walls or displayed safe,

5. No food, drink, or gum is allowed in the galleries.

6. Running, pushing, and roughhousing are not allowed in the museum.
Appropriate museum behavior is necessary to avoid accidentally bumping into and damaging works of art.

7. No photography is allowed
The intensity of the light damages the art.

Reporting Time to School: As per normal
Time to leave school: 8.20a.m.
Returning time to school: 11.45a.m.

GO for H3

A new integrated fitness programme called 'Go for H3" for the whole school! H3 stands for HOPE, HEALTH & HOUSE. This is a project to allow pupils run/walk for a purpose. Japan's current situation is used as the backdrop for this programme whereby pupils will run for a hope that Japan's situation will improve. Other than that, pupils will be exercising for their health and also their respective houses. The goal is for the whole school, including the teachers & staff to travel to Japan by accumulating the distances they have covered individually either by running or walking to add up to 8000 plus kilometers, measuring the actual land distance from Singapore to Japan.

Last Friday was the commencement of the 'GO for H3' programme, initiated by our principal, Mrs Siew. The whole school did a mass run of '400m' around the school to contribute to the total distance covered by the school. A great start for the programme!
3 cheers for Cedar!

Fruittie Veggie Programme

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Fruittie Veggie Programme has kicked off once again to encourage your child/ward to eat more fruits and vegetables during their recess and lunch break. Little 'Fruittie Veggie' cards will be given to pupils spotted eating fruits and vegetables and they can contribute the cards to their respective houses' boxes as shown in the photo above.

The other programme is the "Eat a fruit" day on the 22nd of every month. This is to remind everyone about eating 2+2 serving of fruits and vegetables a day. This coming Friday will be the 22nd of July where everyone in school will be encouraged to bring a fruit to eat during recess or lunch break. Do pack for your child/ward a serving of fruit e.g. an apple, a piece of papaya, a banana etc. to bring to school. Let's keep a healthy diet as it does take more than an apple to keep the doctor away!

Kite Festival 2011

Dear Parents/Guardians,
After an exciting and captivating introduction of kite flying in our assembly program for your child/ward, I believe that they would have told you about the "Kite Festival 2011" that is coming up. This year's Kite Festival will bring the action into the heart of the city, at Marina Bay. There will be hundreds of imaginatively shaped kites on show and also 'learn-how-to-make-kites' workshops being conducted.

It would definitely be a great opportunity for your family to have a great time of fun, fellowship and family bonding together. It is FREE too! The details are as follows:

Location: Marina Bay
Date: 3 September (Sat) - 4 September (Sun)

"What a fantastic way to start the September Holidays..."

Assembly Program: Kite Flying

An interesting program for the pupils to learn more about the origin of kite flying and also a 'live' demonstration of kite flying indoors by the professional kite flyers! Pupils were all captivated by the eye-catching performances by the host and definitely excited about the free kites (sponsored by NTUC income) they will be receiving!

Values In Action: Name-Calling

This video was shown to the class during VIA lesson, regarding an experiment done by Dr. Masaru Emoto to show the power of music, spoken words pictures and thoughts that can affect the crystallized state of water through a period of time. Indeed, children must be aware of the power of words and to be discouraged from name-calling or using foul languages. A good video to show the pupils practically how our words can also affect each individual as 60% of our body is made up of water.

Below was a reflection done by a pupil, Sakthi after watching the video...

"Kind words can be short and easy to speak but their echoes are endless..."

Food for Thought...

Just a little sharing for Parents and Guardians to also understand the importance of 'Soft-skills' and 'Life-skills' for your child/ward. After the second PAL lesson (check out the photos under PAL), I shared with the class the importance of teamwork and being a team player.

Pupils need to be EDUCATED about such values so that they can appreciate their friends and learn to work together. We all have that innate desire to 'win' and the Olympic Creed shown above is a good principle to share with them about the spirit of excellence and to de-emphasize the importance of winning.

This is really to PREVENT individualism and self-centeredness in the child, and to help them understand that in a team, more can be achieved.

It was so coincidence that during Via (check out photos under Via) lesson on Friday, the same week of their Pal lesson 2, the topic was on Teamwork. Hope to have your SUPPORT as well to input what is on my heart for your child/ward, so that they can become a team player in class and also in their CCA.

“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress.
Working together is success.” – John C. Maxwell

Learning Journey to Singapore Science Centre

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Your child/ward will be going on a learning journey to the Singapore Science Centre on the 17th of February 2011, learning about 'A Butterfly is Born' in relation to the Stellar Unit. Things to take note below:
  1. Pupils to bring some food (e.g. snacks, sandwiches etc.) and drinks.
  2. Pupils to bring some money as well as they will be given some time to eat in the canteen when they come back to school from the trip.
  3. Reporting/Dismissal time to/from school remains the SAME as a normal school day.
  4. Do advice your child/ward not to bring expensive items as they will need to be responsible for their own possessions.
*Big Thank You to Wan Xuan and Lakshmanan's mother for volunteering to be the parent volunteers during the trip. I will be calling you personally for the confirmation soon.

Pupil's Daily Necessities

Dear Parents/Guardians,

A daily check list for pupils:
1) Pencil case with sufficient stationaries
E.g pencils, colour pencils, sharpeners, short ruler, eraser, etc.

2) Pupil's Handbook
Do check on your child/ward's handbook for daily homework or even comments from their subject teachers. Do ensure that your child develop a habit of using the handbook daily to keep check of what they need to do or bring for school the next day.

3) Mini-Whiteboard / Marker
Pupils are suppose to purchase a whiteboard in P1. Therefore, ensure that your child/ward has one in his/her schoolbag daily as it will be utilized in class during Mathematics lessons or even other subjects. It will be great if they can have their personal markers too so that they can take ownership of it.

4) Required books
Pupils are advised to packed their bags the night before in relation to their school time-table so that they only bring the necessary books to school. Do reinforce and assist your child/ward to do so daily so that they will remember to bring the required books and leave the 'extra loads' at home.

5) Proper Attire
Pupils are to wear their school uniform daily to school. According to your child/ward's time-table for P2R, their PE periods fall on Monday & Wednesday.  Therefore, your child/ward should be in their PE attire during those 2 days. As for CCA days, if your child/ward is in any sports CCA, he/she can bring along his/her PE attire to change after school.

Your child/ward can bring along their PE uniform with them to change after school if they have CCA on that day.

Chinese New Year Decorations

Greetings to Parents/Guardians of P2R!

As you know, Chinese New Year (CNY) will be approaching and it is time for the inter-class decorations competition. It will be great if your child/ward can bring some CNY decorations (recycled ones from past years) to school so that we can all decorate the EXTERIOR of the classroom together starting from 24th of January. The decorations will not be in the classroom but on the doors, windows and exterior walls of the classroom. Hope that you can provide some materials or even have some fun time with your child/ward making nice decorations at home to decorate their classrooms.

If you would like to join us next week in decorating the class, do let me know and you will be most welcome to come and help out in the decorations in the morning before school starts. Lets be creative together and I believe it will be a good platform for you and your child/ward to interact as well.

Values In Action

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Just an update about the ViA periods on your child/ward's class timetable. This is a new program launched by our very own pastoral committee in Cedar Primary School. Basically, VIA stands for 'Values In Action' and the rationale behind the VIA is to allow teachers to build rapport with their pupils, at the same time having the opportunities to teach values explicitly. There will be newly planned lessons and also the usage of the FTGP book (which your child/ward has already been using in Primary 1) during the 3 periods, every Friday, starting from this week. I am definitely looking forward to spend that 3 periods with your child/ward to teach them about values, positive attitudes and also share my life experiences.

I will try my best to keep you updated about the VIA lessons, giving you a snapshot of what is happening in class. Thank You.

Note: There is a "Comment/Chat" box on the right hand side of the blog where you can give your comments or ask any questions. At the end of every post, there is also a tab with the word 'comment' where you can give your comments too. Let's make the blog an interactive one between the teachers, parents and pupils.

Updates for next week...

Good Afternoon to all Parents/Guardians,

Hope you all are enjoying your weekend with your children! Just some updates for next week. There will be a CCA orientation and recruitment day on the 14th of Jan, Friday. This will be the first CCA in which your child/ward will be involve in, thus, do discuss and also advice your child/ward with regards to the CCA which they are interested in. CCA is a great platform for them to interact with other pupils as well as building their character and leadership qualities.

For CCAs, I am currently in charge of the soccer CCA and school team. If your child is interested in joining, do let me know as well. Let's work together to place your child in the area of their gifting and strengths.

A gentle reminder as well for your child/ward to bring back to school:

  1. Receipt for the Pupil's Handbook or $2.20 if you have yet to purchase it for your child/ward.
  2. 2011 Parents' Needs and Expectations Survey form

Books for Reading Corner...

 Dear Parents/Guardians,

What is a reading corner without a huge library of books for the children to read! Although there will be a variety of books that the classes will be rotating every term, I feel that it will be great if your child can have a bigger spectrum of books to read. Thus, I have ask the pupils to bring some of their story books from their home to school to put in the reading corner so that everyone can share.
Note that if your child/ward is going to collect back the books at the end of the year, do label the book with your child/ward's name on the cover so that it can be kept accountable. As for those who are contributing some of the old books, just want to say "Thank You" so much for your kindness.

(P.S. Thanks to Wan Xuan and her parents for sharing her books with the class. Appreciate!)
